Buyer's guide · updated October 2026How to choose the best AI SEO agency for your business
Every agency now says it does "AI SEO". This guide shows how to choose an AI SEO agency: what the work should involve, the questions to ask, and the red flags that end the conversation. We're an AI SEO agency too, so judge us by the same checklist.

Which is the best AI SEO agency?
The best AI SEO agency for you shows results for businesses like yours, and measures AI visibility across several assistants and repeated runs. It builds on strong classic SEO, earns real mentions on the sites AI tools cite, and never promises a guaranteed spot in ChatGPT. No single agency is "the best" for everyone; the right one passes the checklist below for your industry and city.
AI SEO is also called GEO, AEO or LLM SEO. It means getting your business named and cited when people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode for a recommendation. It's real, and it matters.
It's also new, so marketing claims often run ahead of the evidence. Here's how to tell the difference. Want the basics first? See what an AI SEO agency does and our LLM SEO guide.
How to choose an AI SEO agency: eight checks.
Use this table on every agency call. Ours included.
| What to check | What good looks like | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Measurement | Tracks how often you're mentioned across a fixed set of prompts, run several times on several assistants, against a dated baseline | One screenshot of one ChatGPT answer as "proof" |
| Classic SEO | Fixes and builds your Google rankings too, because AI answers draw heavily on pages that already rank | "SEO is dead, you only need AI optimization" |
| Third-party mentions | Earns mentions on the lists, directories, publications and forums AI tools cite in your industry | Fake reviews, planted forum posts or paid "AI placement" |
| Answer-first content | Writes specific, sourced pages that answer real customer questions, reviewed by people who know your field | Hundreds of AI-written pages published at once |
| Consistent facts | Makes your name, address, services and prices match everywhere: site, Google profile, directories | Ignores your Google Business Profile and listings |
| Technical access | Checks that AI crawlers aren't blocked, and that your content loads without JavaScript | Treats an llms.txt file as the main deliverable |
| Honest timelines | Explains that results build over months, and vary from run to run | "Guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation in 30 days" |
| Industry rules | Knows the advertising rules for regulated work: law, dental, medical | Suggests testimonials or "best in Toronto" claims your regulator forbids |
Questions to ask any AI SEO agency.
- How will you measure my AI visibility? Listen for a fixed prompt set, repeated runs, several assistants and a baseline. AI answers change from one run to the next, so a single answer proves nothing.
- Which assistants matter for my business, and why? ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cite different sources. A good agency explains where your customers actually ask.
- Where will mentions of my business come from? Expect a specific answer: named directories, lists, local publications, industry sites and community threads that already appear in AI answers for your topic.
- What happens to my Google rankings? AI SEO should strengthen classic SEO, not replace it. Ask what they'll fix and build there too.
- Can you show results for a business like mine? Ask for numbers with a "before" date, not just logos.
- How do you use AI to create content? AI-assisted drafting, edited by experts, is fine. Mass-produced pages break Google's rules on scaled content abuse and erode trust.
- Do I own everything? Your Google profile, Search Console, analytics and any content should be yours. You should also see every change made to your site.

Red flags in AI SEO pitches.
Nobody controls what an AI assistant says. Answers are generated fresh each time, and vary between runs, assistants and how the question is worded.
Google's spam policies name scaled content abuse: many pages made mainly to manipulate rankings, however they're produced. It can take the whole site down with it.
Planted reviews and fake posts break the rules of the platforms they're posted on. Google's spam policies now cover attempts to manipulate its AI answers too. Real mentions are earned.
Both are fine to have, but neither is a strategy. Major AI providers haven't said they use llms.txt, and structured data alone won't make an assistant recommend you.
For most businesses, Google still sends far more visitors than AI assistants, and AI tools lean on the pages that rank there. Strong SEO is the foundation of AI visibility.

What AI SEO should cost.
AI SEO overlaps so much with SEO that it usually makes sense to price both inside one retainer. If an agency quotes it separately, ask what you get that the SEO work doesn't cover. At Redline Toronto, it's included in every SEO program, and retainers run from about $1,500 to $6,000+ per month, depending on competition and scope.
For what drives the price and what a retainer should include, see our guide to SEO costs in Toronto.
How Redline Toronto measures up.
We're an AI SEO agency in Toronto. Here's how we answer the checklist:
- Measurement: a fixed prompt set per client, run repeatedly on several assistants, reported against a dated baseline.
- Classic SEO: every AI SEO program sits on top of technical, local and content SEO.
- Mentions: earned through directories, publications and genuine community answers. Never bought, never planted.
- Results: our case studies show Search Console results for a law firm (4.9× clicks) and a clinic (8.9× clicks), each against the same months a year earlier. These are Google Search results; we haven't published AI-visibility results yet. Past results don't predict future results.
- Regulated industries: we write within the rules for law firms, dentists and clinics.

AI SEO agency questions, answered.
Which AI SEO agency is the best?
No single agency is best for every business. The right one shows results for similar businesses, measures AI visibility across several assistants and repeated runs, strengthens your Google rankings too, and earns real third-party mentions. Use the eight-point checklist on this page to compare agencies.
Can an agency guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No. AI assistants generate each answer fresh, and answers vary between runs, assistants and wording. An agency can work to raise how often you're mentioned, and track it honestly. A guaranteed recommendation is a promise no one can keep.
Do I need a separate AI SEO agency if I already have an SEO agency?
Not necessarily. Ask your current agency the questions on this page. If they measure AI visibility properly, and work on third-party mentions and answer-first content, they're already doing AI SEO. If not, it's worth a second opinion.
How long does AI SEO take to show results?
Expect a few months. Mentions on new sources and improvements to your pages take time to be picked up, and AI answers shift as models and sources update. Measure against a baseline every month, not a single answer.
How can I check my own AI visibility?
Write ten questions a customer would ask, such as "best [your service] in Toronto". Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google several times, with memory and personalization off. Note how often you're named and which sources are cited. It's a rough version of what a good agency tracks. For the full method, see our LLM SEO guide.
Is llms.txt important for AI SEO?
It's harmless, but low priority. Major AI providers haven't said they use it. What matters much more: AI crawlers aren't blocked in robots.txt, your content loads without JavaScript, and your pages answer questions clearly.
See what's holding you back.
