What is law firm SEO?
Law firm SEO gets your firm found when people search for a lawyer, like "criminal lawyer Toronto" or "how much does a divorce cost in Ontario". It covers four things: practice-area pages that fully answer those searches, a Google Business Profile that ranks in the map pack, a technically sound site, and authority from sites that mention and link to you. For a law firm, all four must also follow the Law Society of Ontario's marketing rules.
Legal searches are some of the most valuable on Google. Advertisers pay for every click on terms like "law firm SEO Toronto". Practice-area terms such as "personal injury lawyer" cost far more.
Organic rankings win those same clients with no cost per click. And the pages keep working after the ads stop.
Legal search differs from most markets in three ways:
- Google holds legal content to a higher standard. Legal advice is a "Your Money or Your Life" topic. Google's quality guidelines ask raters to look for clear authorship, real expertise and trust. Anonymous, generic content struggles.
- Legal searches are often local. Google ranks the map pack on relevance, distance and prominence. You can't win the map pack in a city where you have no office. So local strategy starts from your real offices and your real lawyers.
- Your marketing is regulated. Common SEO tactics, like "best lawyer in Toronto" titles, "specialist" claims and testimonial-heavy pages, can put a firm in breach of the LSO's rules. We build around the rules, not over them.
Law firm SEO services. One program.
Six parts, run every month, covering every place a client might find you.
Practice-area pages
One deep page per practice area and per real office, in plain language. Each answers what clients actually ask about process, cost, timelines and what happens next. Each names the lawyer who wrote or reviewed it.
Google Business Profile
Correct primary category, real office address and accurate hours. Profiles for individual lawyers where Google allows them. A business name free of keywords, since keyword-stuffed names are a common suspension risk.
Technical SEO
Crawlability, redirects, duplicate pages, Core Web Vitals and structured data. Legal sites built up over years often carry duplicate and outdated pages that split their rankings. We consolidate them carefully.
Lawyer bios that prove expertise
Call year, education, practice focus, Law Society licensing and published work. Google and AI tools can then tie each lawyer to their areas of law. We check every name against the LSO directory.
AI search (GEO/AEO)
More clients now ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode "who should I call about…". We structure your pages so AI tools can quote them. Then we earn mentions on the sites those tools cite.
Authority and mentions
Earned links and mentions from legal directories, local media, bar associations and community organizations. No bought links. They put your rankings at risk and are hard to undo.
SEO built around the Law Society of Ontario's rules.
Yes. Chapter 4 of the Law Society of Ontario's Rules of Professional Conduct treats a firm's website as marketing, and titles, headings, page copy and even structured data count. Common SEO habits, such as superlative titles or testimonial pages, can conflict with those rules. We review copy against them before it's published, and your firm keeps the final say.
These are the rules that most often clash with typical SEO advice. Here's what we do instead.
Marketing must be demonstrably true, accurate and verifiable (rule 4.2-1). Claims of superiority over other lawyers, and rankings or awards that aren't bona fide, may breach it. We target searches like "best criminal lawyer Toronto" with accurate copy, never with the claim itself.
Only LSO Certified Specialists may use "specialist" or a similar designation (rule 4.3-1). Unless the lawyer is certified, we write "practice focused on…" or "experience in…". We check that against the LSO directory.
Publishing results or amounts recovered without saying that past results don't predict future ones may breach the rules, and so may testimonials that make emotional appeals. We add the disclaimer wherever outcomes appear. And we don't add review stars to your own site's schema, which Google doesn't allow anyway.
Marketing must say whether services are provided by lawyers or paralegals, and must identify licensees as such (rule 4.2-1.1). This goes into every bio and every service page we touch.
Marketing "second opinion" services is prohibited (rule 4.2-1.2). So we leave those searches alone, even when they have volume.
Advertised fees must be reasonably precise, say whether disbursements and taxes are extra, and be honoured (rule 4.2-2). We only publish fee figures you've approved.

Results for an Ontario law firm
A multi-office criminal and family law firm, run by our team. The firm asked us not to name them. Every number comes from the firm's own Google Search Console, comparing the same three months a year apart (July to September 2025 vs 2026), so seasonality is ruled out.

What the work included:
- a baseline first: 16 months of Search Console history and all 665 URLs with impressions, mapped before any structural change
- each lawyer on the team page checked against the LSO directory
- a retired phone number removed from the structured data, and an office page's number corrected
- duplicate, typo and outdated pages (including old 2020 COVID pages) 301-redirected into their current versions
- tap-to-call blocks on high-intent practice pages, and a location page reframed around the services offered there
Search Console, property-level totals, Jul–Sep 2025 vs Jul–Sep 2026. October 2026 to date: 1,853 clicks, against 283 for the same days of 2025. Past results don't predict future results.
Five steps. Every change measured.
Audit and baseline
We record where you stand today: rankings, map-pack visibility across your city, Search Console clicks, AI mentions, calls and form leads. Every later result is measured against this dated baseline.
Fact sheet and compliance check
One sheet of verified firm facts: offices, phone numbers, lawyers, call years and practice areas. Your site, Google profile and directories all have to match it. We flag any existing copy likely to be a problem under the LSO rules.
Fix the foundation
Technical fixes, duplicate consolidation, schema, speed and your Google Business Profile. Plus call and form tracking, so we can tie rankings to new matters.
Build practice-area depth
New and rewritten pages for the cases you want most. Written for clients, reviewed by your lawyers, then promoted through earned mentions and links.
Measure and report
A plain-English report every month: what changed, what moved, which calls and consultations came from search, and what's next. Each change is checked again at 14 and 28 days.
SEO for every practice area.
Each practice area has its own searches, competitors and rules. A criminal defence client searches at 2 a.m. on a phone and calls the first firm that answers. An estates client compares three firms over two weeks.
So we plan each one separately.
- Personal injury: high-competition, high-value searches, plus contingency-fee and case-result rules.
- Criminal defence: urgent, mobile, local. Tap-to-call, after-hours intake and map-pack strength matter most.
- Family law: cost and process questions ("how long does a divorce take in Ontario") that suit deep, answer-first guides.
- Immigration: multilingual searches and AI-assistant questions, where clear, current information wins.
- Employment, real estate, wills and estates: steady demand and comparison-shopping, where trust signals and clear fees convert.

Five things to check before you hire any legal SEO agency
| Ask them | How we do it |
|---|---|
| Is every page checked against the LSO's marketing rules before it goes live? | Copy checked against chapter 4 |
| Will you build pages for cities where we have no office? | Real offices only, each with unique content |
| How will you prove results? | Dated baseline, then 14- and 28-day checks |
| Does the work cover AI search? | Included in every program |
| Where will the links come from? | Earned and relevant. No paid links. |
How much does law firm SEO cost?
Our SEO retainers generally run from about $1,500 to $6,000+ per month. Where your firm lands depends on how many practice areas and offices you want to rank for, and how competitive those searches are. We quote after the free audit, once we know what it will actually take.
Personal injury in Toronto sits at the top of that range. A single-office estates practice sits much lower.
No one controls Google's results, so we don't guarantee rankings. We don't lock firms into long contracts, either. What we commit to is the work, the measurement and a clear report every month.
See where you stand.

Law firm SEO questions, answered.
How long does SEO take for a law firm?
Technical fixes and Google Business Profile changes can show up within weeks. New practice-area pages usually need three to six months to reach their potential, longer in competitive areas like personal injury in Toronto. We check every change at 14 and 28 days, so you see early signals instead of waiting blind.
Is SEO or Google Ads better for lawyers?
They do different jobs. Google Ads brings in cases as soon as a campaign is live, and stops when the budget stops. SEO is slower to build, but keeps working with no cost per click. Many firms run ads for their most urgent practice areas while SEO builds, then rebalance as organic rankings grow.
Can you rank our firm in cities where we don't have an office?
Not in the map pack. Google ranks local results partly on distance from the searcher. You can't optimize your way into a city you aren't in. Location pages for cities with no office are a known doorway-page pattern Google penalizes. We build pages for your real offices, plus useful content on nearby areas you genuinely serve.
Will SEO content follow the Law Society's marketing rules?
We draft every page with chapter 4 of the LSO Rules of Professional Conduct in mind. That means no unverifiable superiority claims, no "specialist" unless the lawyer is certified, past-results disclaimers where outcomes appear, and clear lawyer or paralegal identification. Your firm reviews and approves everything before it goes live.
Do you ask our clients for Google reviews?
Only in a way that follows both Google's rules and yours. Google bans incentives and "review gating", and testimonials with emotional appeals can raise issues under the LSO rules. We agree on a review policy with your firm first. And we always reply to reviews without confirming that the reviewer is a client.
How do you show up in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?
AI tools build answers from pages they can retrieve and sources that mention you. We make your practice pages specific and easy to quote. We keep your facts consistent everywhere. And we earn mentions on the sites those tools cite. Answers change from run to run, so we track how often you appear across repeated runs of fixed prompts.
What do you need from our firm to start?
For the free audit, only your website address. To start the work, we need access to your website, Google Search Console, Google Analytics and Google Business Profile. Then a short call with a partner confirms practice priorities, offices and the lawyers who will review content.
See where your firm loses searches.
Tell us about your firm. Your written audit arrives within five business days. No call needed.
Your audit covers:
- where you rank for your practice areas in Google and the map pack
- which competitors take those searches
- whether ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI answers mention your firm
- technical problems holding the site back
- any copy or schema likely to be a problem under the Law Society of Ontario's marketing rules
Every finding is ranked by impact, with the evidence behind it. Yours to use, with us or without us. Then, if you like what you see, a short call.
In short: a free, written audit in five business days. No call needed. Yours to keep, whether or not you hire us. Every month you wait, the firms already ranking take those searches.
