How it works

How the Google Ads calculator works.

Four plain steps. The calculator just does them for you.

Clicks = budget ÷ cost per click

Leads = clicks × share of clicks that become leads

Customers = leads × share of leads that become customers

Revenue = customers × value of a customer

To find the budget for a target, it works backwards: leads you want ÷ the share of clicks that become leads, rounded up, × cost per click.

A worked example.

A Toronto dental clinic wants 20 new-patient enquiries a month. WordStream's 2026 US conversion rate for dentists is 10.67%, so that takes 188 clicks. At Toronto's dental average of CA$4.15 a click, the budget is about CA$780 a month. Choose "Dental" above and enter 20 leads to see it.

Google also caps how fast a budget is spent. A campaign "will never exceed 2 times your average daily budget on a given day", and you're "never charged more than 30.4 multiplied by your average daily budget amount" in a month (Google Ads Help).

Where the numbers come from

The industry presets, and their sources.

Each industry loads two numbers. The cost per click is Toronto's weighted average from our study of 104 Toronto searches: Ahrefs estimates from October 2026, converted to Canadian dollars. The conversion rate is the closest category in WordStream's 2026 US benchmarks, from more than 13,000 campaigns (WordStream).

Where no WordStream category fits, we use its average across all industries, 8.18%. Treat the presets as a starting point. After a month, swap in your own cost per click and conversion rate from your Google Ads account.

What it means for you
  • Judge Google Ads on cost per customer, not cost per click. A CA$15 click can be a bargain if it brings a CA$5,000 client.
  • The fastest way to lower cost per lead is usually a better landing page, not a lower bid.
  • Compare it with organic search: our SEO ROI calculator uses the same inputs.

Answers

Google Ads budgets, answered.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads?

Start from the leads you need, not a round number: leads wanted ÷ conversion rate × cost per click. For a Toronto dental clinic that wants 20 enquiries a month, that's about CA$780.

What is a good cost per lead?

One that leaves room for profit after you close the lead. If one customer in four buys and spends CA$1,000, a lead is worth up to CA$250 to you before your other costs.

Where do the industry numbers come from?

Cost per click comes from our October 2026 study of 104 Toronto searches, using Ahrefs estimates. Conversion rates come from WordStream's 2026 US benchmarks, mapped to the closest category.

Is this calculator accurate?

It's as accurate as the numbers you enter. The presets are averages; your own account data will always be better, so replace them once you have a month of results.
